What made you decide that you wanted to work in a technical position such as that of an ICT support technician?
For me, technology has held great meaning ever since I was introduced to it. I picked up this career because I have a natural flair of working in a technical position, and enjoy handling complex technical support tasks.
As an ICT support technician, what have been your prime duties in a previous role?
While working as an ICT support technician, I have been responsible for connecting, setting up and checking workstations and peripherals to ensure operational smoothness. In addition to this, I have been actively detecting, diagnosing and resolving workstation and network errors, along with handling maintenance and upgrades on assigned systems.
What is your take on workstation / network security?
I am a firm believer of “better safe than sorry”, which is why I place a lot of emphasis on ensuring that all systems and networks assigned to me are virus-free, by implementing virus protection and security measures on them.
What type of skills do you believe one needs to be able to work effectively as an ICT support technician?
I believe that one needs to be highly analytic and aware if one wants to work as an ICT support technician. As specific job-related skills go, it is imperative to possess knowledge of desktop and application support and server and network issues, along with exceptional skills in handling system security and maintenance.
What is the most difficult part of working as an ICT support technician?
I would not coin it difficult but I do find troubleshooting to be quite a challenging job to do, as there is no telling how long a certain issue will take to resolve. But since this is part of the game, I do not mind spending time and effort on resolving technical issues.
Tell us of a time when you did something that made you shine in this role.
About a year ago, I was presented with a network mapping problem that no other technician had been able to resolve, for over 5 weeks. The network in question was compromised as a result, and functionality was limited. Within 4 hours of looking through processes, I managed to not only determine what the issue was, but also resolve it. I believe that this was quite a great achievement on my part.
