Position Overview

A dance teacher may be hired in different circumstances, depending on the specific needs of the employer.

Usually, dance teachers are hired by schools to give dance lessons to students, as part of an extracurricular activity.

However, there are dedicated dance institutes out there that provide the same services, and hire experienced dance teachers to provide instruction to their students.

Position Requirements

Working as a dance teacher may only require a high school diploma or a GED equivalent, but formal dance training is an absolute must.

Depending on what your own specific interest is, you may take up training in Hip Hop, Jazz, Tango, Ballet, or classical, and then train to train others!

Working at this position means that your dancing skills should be perfect, and you have the ability to impart this genre of education to your students. Needless to say, dance teachers need to be exceptionally agile where physical strength is concerned, as they are constantly on their feet (literally).

Also, it is important for people working at this position to be patient and pleasant, as to many students dance may not come naturally. Moreover, dance teachers need to be pro at what they do, especially one certain dance genre that they are most comfortable performing, and teaching.

• Engage new students in conversation to determine their dance form learning interest.

• Provide students with information regarding the different dance forms, and their execution.

• Serve as a recreation leader by developing, supervising, and conducting various types of dance lessons, on individual and group basis.

• Teach various dance techniques at different levels, for both young students and adults.

• Provide both leadership and vision in teaching all areas of dance curriculum, such as techniques, theory, and performance.

• Create and maintain active and collaborative relationships with students, encouraging them to succeed in learning desired dance forms.

• Develop different teaching plans for all students, based on their specific requirements and interests.

• Design formative and summative assessments, ensuring that they are aligned with the long term objectives of the dance course.

• Provide instruction to students, correct their techniques, and assist struggling students on a one on one basis.

• Educate students about the background of each dance form that they are learning, by providing them with historical and cultural references.
