Cover letters tell amazing stories. Stories about an individual’s past experiences, how well he did in previous jobs and how much he learnt. These stories can prove to be quite interesting for people who are in the position to decide if you will be given a job. So instead of making cover letters boring, weave stories that will interest the hiring manager to the extent that he reaches for the telephone to call you, instead of picking up the next cover letter.

It is not very often that cover letters are disregarded, unless they are really badly written. Starting off by saying this is with reference to your advertisement… is a recipe for disaster. If you do not want your cover letter to go to an early grave, make sure what you write in it is not run of the mill. Ordinary, stale ways of writing cover letters are out now. Hiring managers look for candidates who have a greater grip on what they want to say through novel content. Ordinary is out. Nonconventional is in!

While stories are all very well, it is not possible to write a cover letter in a story-like format continually. A little bit of humor and tale-spinning is fine but don’t do an “overkill”. Your cover letter can be written along the lines of the following sample:

• First-hand experience in maintaining patients’ records by ensuring both accuracy and accessibility of records retained in facility databases
• Demonstrated expertise in responding to requests for information retrieval by verifying requesters’ identities and purposes of requests
• Highly experienced in planning, developing, maintaining and operating health record indexes and retrieval systems required to collect, classify and analyze information
