What made you want to become a drug counselor?
I have always known that drug abuse will be the downfall of society. Hoping to do my bit to curtail the massive problem that drug abuse is causing in the country, I decided to work in this arena.
What is the main skill that you possess which makes you an excellent person to hire as a drug counselor?
I am an extremely insightful person, which makes it easy for me to delve deep into clients’ minds, and determine the root cause of drug abuse. I believe that it is this skill which makes it possible for me to understand and help people.
What are some of the duties that you have performed in the role of a drug counselor?
As a drug counselor, I have been assessing clients by engaging them in conversation, performing intakes and assessments, determining medical necessities for substance abuse treatments, providing diagnostic evaluations, and ensuring that clients are provided with the best course of treatment that there is.
How do you handle the stress associated with this work?
It is true that as a counselor, one can get emotionally involved in cases. However, years of experience and training to stay detached has made sure that I feel for my clients on a professional level, but do not get emotionally involved, keeping stress at bay.
What is the most difficult case that you have handled?
I would probably call it is the saddest case that I have handled. There was a little girl, aged 7, who was a cocaine addict, because her parents did it for recreation, and encouraged her to. Social services brought her to me, and it was heartrending to see a little girl having to go through all that she was going through.
What are your career aspirations?
I am working hard to eradicate substance abuse from within my city at the moment. I hope to work on a state level next.
